We are thrilled to celebrate our talented Project Architect, AIA, NCARB, Khris Kirk, as she recently completed all requirements and testing to become a Registered Architect in the state of South Carolina. This is no small feat, as completing this registration requires a series of rigorous examinations and years of qualified experience.
At COR3 Design, we are deeply passionate about community outreach, so much so that it is one of our main core values as a company. One organization in particular we support is Habitat for Humanity, Greenville, a nonprofit committed to the work of building an equitable community for all of Greenville’s residents.
During a recent expedition to Egypt to celebrate a family wedding with team member Marie Ayoub, Terri and Brian Doiron found themselves in awe of the incredible architecture present throughout the country. Like many, they were particularly enamored by the pyramids, which are truly larger than life and equally as mysterious. The trip served as a historical and cultural education, as well as incredible inspiration for COR3’s work back in the United States.
As the days grow shorter, and a chill creeps into the air, our thoughts turn to Halloween and often, Haunted Houses. When we think of these Haunted Houses, we typically have one form of design that comes to mind: Gothic architecture. This ancient style, with its pointed arches, flying buttresses, and intricate ornamentation, has become linked to the spookiest season of the year.
As architects and designers, we constantly have our ear to the ground for inspiration. One thing we absolutely can relate to is the theme of constraints. Rarely do we come into a project where there is a blank slate opportunity to simply create something beautiful and functional.
At COR3 Design, we pride ourselves on our unusually high number of female architects and architectural designers. For a field that is typically dominated by men, we are a sort of statistical anomaly. We have an unwavering commitment to building a diverse team through a collaborative and inclusive culture.
For more than 10,000 years (or, since the Stone Age), wood has been an integral part of construction around the world. It is valued for its versatility, with external and internal uses as infinite as the mind can imagine.
Of course, wood is a natural form so it is subject to degradation and impact from the elements, which can result in rotting, cracking, erosion and the loss of physical properties. For years, scientists have explored ways to make it more durable and therefore sustainable to lengthen its lifespan as a construction material.
How many times have you looked at a piece of art on display in a museum or gallery and wondered to yourself, “what exactly am I looking at and why is it so special?” As architects and designers, we understand this sentiment well thanks to the natural overlap between art and our field.
As architectural designers who truly cut our teeth in the retail field, we were tickled to read a story about Swedish retailer IKEA trying to eliminate a core element of their design–-and the backlash that followed from loyal customers.
