Preparing to host the prestigious Paris 2024 Olympic Games has prompted a comprehensive renovation of the iconic Stade de France. This ambitious project aimed to enhance the stadium’s infrastructure to elevate the spectator experience, optimize operational efficiency for sporting and cultural events, and embrace sustainable practices.
Modernization Efforts
Since its closure following the Rugby World Cup Final in October 2023, the Stade de France has undergone extensive upgrades, marking a pivotal moment in its history. These enhancements, initiated in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic-induced closure, have been meticulously executed to align with the specific requirements of hosting the Olympics, awarded to France in 2017.
Enhancements and Innovations
- Enhanced Viewing Experience: Temporary giant screens, equivalent to the size of tennis courts, have been strategically installed atop scaffolding, effectively doubling the display area to enrich the viewing experience for spectators.
- Technological Advancements: The stadium’s technological capabilities have been significantly bolstered. New-generation screens, larger and more advanced, have replaced existing ones. Additionally, the installation of 5G coverage under the roof complements existing 3G-4G networks, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the venue.
- Energy Efficiency: A major focus has been on sustainability. The stadium’s lighting systems have been modernized with energy-efficient LED fixtures, enhancing both sports lighting on the pitch and architectural illumination of the building. These upgrades not only reduce energy consumption but also enable dynamic lighting effects in a spectrum of vibrant colors.
- Power Infrastructure: Previously reliant on diesel generators for stability during major events, the Stade de France now operates solely on city electricity, thanks to a new grid-connected power source. This transition ensures that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be conducted under environmentally friendly conditions.
- Athletics Facilities: Central to the renovation is the overhaul of the “Field of Play” (FOP). The installation of a new 14,000 m² purple athletics track, meticulously graded to international standards using advanced laser technology, underscores the stadium’s commitment to precision and performance enhancement for athletes.
